Bleed, Safe Area and Trim
The printing process isn’t perfect, so to make sure your designs come out looking the best they can there are a few guidelines to follow. What we’re talking about are the Bleed, Safe Area and Trim.

Bleed (5mm)
The ‘bleed’ is the area of the design that will be trimmed off when your artwork is cut to its final size. All elements of your design that extend past the ‘trim’ are said to ‘bleed’ off. We cut the ‘bleed’ area off your designs to avoid unsightly white edges. Make sure any images or colours fill this area to the very edge. 5mm of bleed is required on all edges.

Safe Area (5mm)
The safe zone is the area inside the trim that will be kept clear from cutting blades, so text or sensitive information should be kept within this area. We require a 5mm ’safe zone’ inside the ’trim’ on all edges, otherwise it could get cut off.

Trim
The trim is where we remove the ‘bleed’ and cut your artwork to its final size.

There are some key points to remember when using text/line art in your designs:

    • Make sure text is at least 8pt – very small text can look good on screen but does not print well.
    • Try to keep text in bold colors, made up of one or two inks only (C, M, Y or K).
    • When printing lines in a solid or dark color, make sure they are no thinner than 0.5pt. If you’re using a lighter color, we recommend 1pt.
    • Make sure all fonts are embedded or outlined.
    • Save your designs using the ‘Adobe PDF/X-1a:2001’ preset, where possible.
    • Remove any cutting, crop or trim marks. These are applied by Paperit, as we send your files to print.
